What is US Strong?
US Strong is a non-profit, non-partisan initiative focused on building support for Extreme Weather Relief and Protection. We need serious solutions and ideas. We work with a wide range of individuals, businesses and community leaders to find a way forward together. We do not endorse candidates and pride ourselves on being non-partisan.
Why an Extreme Weather Relief and Protection Fund?
An ounce of prevention: Effective measures exist today to protect our homes, businesses and communities from future extreme weather disasters. Prevention is less costly, creates good jobs, and saves lives. Recent studies prove that for every $1 dollar spent to prevent devastation from storms, saves $9 of clean up and recovery costs.
An Extreme Weather Relief and Protection Fund must be a dedicated fund that can be quickly accessed to help communities recover from extreme weather events thereby avoiding the need for emergency and now partisan Congressional appropriations.
It must support preventive efforts to better protect vulnerable communities now and into the future from extreme weather events through lasting and cost-effective solutions such as creating wetland buffers to reduce storm surge and fostering natural dune systems.
An Extreme Weather Relief and Protection Fund must raise revenue fairly so we don’t hurt middle class taxpayers and small businesses. The Fund should not burden working families and businesses with increased property, income, and corporate business taxes. Instead, there should be a financial cost to putting more carbon pollution into the atmosphere that is fueling more extreme weather.
How much would the Extreme Weather Relief and Protection Fund cost and how would it be funded?
We’d leave the total to the experts. We’re already paying for relief from extreme weather. Congress appropriated over $50 billion alone for Sandy recovery. Congress appropriated over $60 billion for Katrina recovery. There are billions more spent on flood insurance, drought relief, forest fire relief, coastal erosion—the list goes on and on. And that does not include the countless other federal, state, local and private costs. To build the sea walls and other protections we need will cost billions more.
The time has come to change the way Congress budgets for disasters. Currently, there is no dedicated funding system and Congress pays for these costs by adding these enormous sums of money to the federal deficit; They just ending up sticking taxpayers and our children with the bill. US Strong believes that we shouldn’t increase income taxes or property taxes—instead we are calling on Congress to find a dedicated new source of revenue. One logical option is to put in place a financial cost to putting more carbon pollution into the atmosphere that is fueling more extreme weather.
How is US Strong funded?
We are funded by an initial grant from the Rockefeller Family Fund, a registered charitable organization. We are actively fundraising to build more support for the campaign.
Why is US Strong focusing on New Jersey first?
To address the root causes of climate change, we need a wide range of actions on local, state, national and international levels. US Strong will focus on building support to provide extreme weather relief and protection here at home.
US Strong has begun work in New Jersey because of Superstorm Sandy and the devastation it caused. Sandy forever changed our landscape, leaving us with destroyed and flooded homes and businesses, economic hardships and devastated communities, and pummeled and polluted shoreline up and down the New Jersey and New York coast.
Though Superstorm Sandy was extreme, super-storms are becoming more routine. In fact, in the last 5 years, New Jersey alone has been inundated by 6 major storms. Experts have made it clear that we need to prepare for more frequent and severe storms in the future.
We need to prepare for the next storm—so we’re never left unprepared again. The devastation caused by Sandy needs to be a wake-up call. Sandy was a tragedy and we’re not here to blame anyone — but if we are not prepared for the next storm it will be irresponsible leadership.
